Many of the parameters related to masochism in La Regenta are tied into Catholicism. Through La Regenta, my study presents those discursive mechanisms shared by masochism and the Catholic Church---pain, remorse, humiliation, punishment, and the promise to follow the commandments of a superior/dominant figure. Likewise, my dissertation shows the point where masochist behavior differs from that of Catholicism. Furthermore, the theories of masochism become a key tool to reveal how the social repression mechanisms result in terrible consequences.
